Why Gerbils?

So, you might ask, why gerbils, instead of hamsters? There are many reasons!

Temperament
Gerbils are naturally curious and friendly, and do not have a tendency to bite as long as they are treated well.

Sleeping Habits
Hamsters are nocturnal, which means that they sleep during the day when you want to interact with them, and then are up all night when you're asleep. Gerbils have periods of sleep and wakefulness throughout the day and night, which means that one, they're not as likely to keep you up all night running on a wheel, and two, there are ample opportunities to play with a wide-awake gerbil during the day.

Bedding
Gerbils originate from desert-type climates, thus they do not consume much water. As a result, their bedding stays fresher longer than hamsters.

Breeding
Unlike hamsters, gerbil dads make wonderful fathers! Gerbils make great parents and cannibalism of young is very rare, even when the pups are (responsibly) handled at a young age.

In My Opinion...
In my personal experience, gerbils seem to have a lot more personality than hamsters and are a lot more interactive in general with their environments and their humans. They're less cranky and much more curious than hamsters!
